Everything You Need to Know About Hydorponics

What is hydroponics; a system known as the CEA/hydroponics or the "Controlled Environment Agriculture Hydroponics System". This method is often used in locations that have no available soil or no nutrients in the soil; however, it is not limited to that alone. People are finding it is much easier, more cost effective, and higher in nutrients, to use in any situation. Traditional green houses, with soil beds, present the problem of the soil becoming nutrient depleted, requiring frequent cycles of changing the soil. With the hydroponic system this problem has been eliminated.

During the first century the Babylonians enjoyed the beautiful hanging gardens. The Aztec developed the elegant floating gardens in the tenth and eleventh century. As you can see, the hydroponics system is not a new phenomenon. Though it has not been widely used throughout history, its popularity has expanded during the recent years due to the extended study of its many benefits.

In 1930 a scientist by the name of Gericke was experimenting with different methods of hydroponics and produced the first commercial use of this system in the United States. During World War II, this new found idea became very useful for the military when they would land on Wake Island, in the Pacific, which consisted of rock with no soil. Since air lifting produce to the Island was prohibited, due to the high expense of this form of transport, a hydroponics system was developed to supply the troops with fresh produce. This was reported to be the first commercial use of the hydroponics system, according to Times magazine.

Today, many people including commercial providers are using this system for a number of different reasons. The almost perfect growing environment has been found to be very beneficial. Commercial produce growers are able to provide the public with nutrient rich food and a much less overhead cost. Flower growers have learned that the cultivating process is much easier, also resulting in a more beautiful flower and abundant harvest. I recently watched a program, focusing on a NY restaurant that decided to construct a vertical system of growing their vegetables and fruits on the roof of their building; straight from the plant to the table is a benefit we all would appreciate. Since then I have found many restaurants and flower growers following a similar pattern.

Whether you are in a rural setting or in the city, this is an excellent way of cultivating your garden.

As a garden lover, I have thoroughly enjoyed writing about the hydroponics system. I hope you have found this informative. If you would like more information on this subject, I have compiled other exciting articles which you can read at What is Hydroponics.
