If you are passionate about gardening and maintaining your turf grass, you are probably one of those who have discovered the convenience of hydro-mulch seeding. It is convenient in terms of effort and time needed to be invested.

Hence, it is not surprising why this alternative method of planting lawn grass is becoming more popular. Unlike the traditional methods of planting sods and sowing dry seeds, hydro-mulch seeding is less labor-intensive. It can cover larger area given the same amount of time as compared to laying sods, brick by brick. Using hydro-mulch seeding method is not as back-breaking, so to speak.

Soil benefits

Using hydro-seeding method can also provide several benefits for the soil. Primarily, it can improve the fertility of the soil by introducing organic and inorganic nutrients. The organic constituents of the mulch may include shredded plant components such as leaves.

These organic components are biodegradable and will become composts. Their organic compounds can be processed by bacteria and re-absorbed by the plants. On the other hand, the soil fertility can also be increased because of the inorganic fertilizer additives such as potassium, magnesium, zinc and calcium.

The mulch used in hydro-seeding has fibrous materials that can bind effectively on the soil surface. These fibrous materials make it easy for seeds to be securely implanted. At the same time, the wet fibrous materials serve as some sort of net that prevents soil erosion.

The mulch also helps preserve the moisture and nutrients of the soil. The process allows the seed to germinate and grow on sloping and uneven terrains while preventing soil collapse. When the roots begin to develop and burrow into the ground, the soil becomes more stable.

Application ease

Using hydro-mulch seeding method is a very efficient way of planting turf or lawn grass. It can be done even without high level of skills. It is not as laborious as laying sods but it can be very precise.

The use of adjustable sprayer nozzle and a high-powered pump make it almost as easy as watering plants. The big difference is that instead of water, a slurry of seed and mulch is sprayed on the ground. The use of sprayer makes it relatively easy to sow the seeds on a large area. It also makes it easier to access hard-to-reach areas. Patching up damaged or bald areas is also much easier to do.

Precision in terms of seed density per area and the area of coverage is also easy to maintain because of the adjustable size of the nozzle and pressure. The amount of water, mulch, seeds and fertilizers can be precisely adjusted in pre-mixed slurry. This means that the slurry is homogenous all throughout.

Improved aesthetics

Organic green dye is often added in the slurry mixture used in hydro-mulch seeding. This dye is biodegradable and can easily decompose as the seeds germinate and grow into mature plants. Unlike using dry seeds and sods, the verdant appearance can be made more uniformed. The relatively uniform growth rate of the seeds will also make it possible to have a more visually attractive turf.
